Bhogapuram International Airport: First Flight Lands in Historic Milestone for Andhra Pradesh - AP Events

A Historic Touchdown in North Andhra

The morning of January 4, 2026, was not just another day for the people of Vizag and Vizianagaram. As the sun climbed over the Bay of Bengal, a sleek Air India Airbus A320 descended gracefully onto the brand-new tarmac of Bhogapuram International Airport.

This wasn't just a landing; it was the birth of a new era. Officially named the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, this project is the crown jewel of Andhra Pradesh’s infrastructure, designed to be one of the most advanced aviation hubs in South Asia.

The Grand Welcome: Water Cannons and Cheers

As the aircraft taxied toward the terminal, it was greeted by a majestic water cannon salute—the highest honor in the aviation world. Onboard were key officials, including Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, who heralded the flight as a "successful validation" of the airport's world-class safety and navigation systems.

What Makes Bhogapuram Special?

1. A "Cyclone-Proof" Engineering Marvel

Built by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd (GVIAL), this airport is designed to withstand the coastal weather of the Bay of Bengal. It is one of the few airports in India capable of operating safely even during extreme wind speeds of up to 275 kmph.

2. The Economic Corridor

Bhogapuram is strategically located to serve as a bridge between the industrial city of Visakhapatnam and the growing trade centers of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. With a dedicated Cargo Terminal, it will become a primary export point for the region’s massive pharmaceutical and seafood industries.

3. A Traveler’s Paradise

Forget long queues and cramped spaces. The Phase 1 terminal is built to handle 6 million passengers annually. It features lush green landscaping (inspired by the "City of Destiny" Vizag) and high-end retail lounges that rival international hubs like Singapore or Dubai.

Looking Ahead: When Can You Fly?

While the first flight has landed, the airport is currently in its final "polishing" phase.

  • Current Status: 97% Infrastructure Complete.

  • Full Commercial Launch: Scheduled for June 26, 2026.

  • International Routes: Direct flights to Singapore, Dubai, and London are already being mapped out for the 2026-2027 winter schedule.

Final Thoughts

The first flight arrival is more than just a test; it is a promise of growth, tourism, and global connectivity for Andhra Pradesh. As we wait for the grand opening this summer, the horizon for North Andhra has never looked brighter.
